These spectacular plants only grow in the volcanic soil high up on the mountains of Hawaii. They are actually related to the sunflower. They grow for several years before they have a single blooming cycle and die. I stand over six feet tall and this plant touched my arm when I held it straight out. It was a prime example of the plant. I was lucky to see it as its location was not given at the ranger station, only several smaller ones. I think that they did not want it to get too much traffic.
